The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN-related agency focused on humane and orderly migration. This Field Project Associate role supports the IOM Data and Research Team in Ethiopia. The position contributes to the successful implementation of IOM Data research operations-related projects, specifically within the Data and Research Unit operations, supporting various tasks related to project CS1262, RR0565, and NC0161.
Job Purpose
The Field Project Associate's primary purpose is to support the IOM Data and Research Team in Ethiopia, ensuring the successful implementation of data research operations and related projects. This role is instrumental in maintaining the quality and integrity of data collection, processing, and analysis activities, which are vital for informing IOM's migration-related initiatives. The Associate will assist in the comprehensive implementation and monitoring of project activities, meticulously verifying and controlling the quality of collected data. Key contributions include retrieving, compiling, summarizing, analyzing, and presenting critical information on specific project topics. Furthermore, the role involves developing detailed work plans, drafting essential status reports, and facilitating effective communication with governmental focal points to ensure seamless operational execution. By gathering timely information on displacement and mobility flows and supporting Flow Monitoring Operations, the Associate directly contributes to IOM's mandate of promoting humane and orderly migration through robust, evidence-based insights and data management.
Responsibilities
The Field Project Associate will be responsible for assisting in the implementation and monitoring of project activities, ensuring the quality and integrity of data collection. This includes verifying and monitoring data quality, taking corrective measures, and performing quality control. The Associate will retrieve, compile, summarize, analyze, and present information and data on specific project topics. In coordination with the DRU team, they will develop work plans and activity schedules for data collection, processing, and analysis. Key duties also involve drafting status reports, identifying shortfalls, and suggesting remedial actions, as well as facilitating regional endorsement and communication with government focal points for smooth operations. The role requires drafting correspondence on project issues, preparing and updating reports, briefing notes, graphics, statistical tables, and presentations. The Associate will respond to information requests, maintain files/records, and organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions. They will participate in meetings, coordinate implementation activities with local authorities, partners, UN agencies, and other stakeholders. Additionally, the Associate will assist in monitoring implementing partners, report non-compliances, gather timely information on displacement and mobility flows, support Flow Monitoring Operations, and provide guidance/training to new or junior staff, performing other assigned duties as required.
Work Experience
Candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience in field-level data collection, research, and community-based response approaches. This includes experience liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, and UN agencies. Prior experience working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, and other vulnerable groups is essential. Experience working at the community and individual level in rural and remote areas of Ethiopia is required. Work experience with international humanitarian organizations or NGOs in a multi-cultural setting, particularly in data collection in Ethiopia, is an advantage.
Skills
Required skills include in-depth knowledge of migration-related subject areas, UN and bilateral donor programming, and financial rules and regulations. Proficiency with Geographic Positioning System (GPS) tools, Open Data Kit (ODK), and Kobo technology is essential. Candidates must demonstrate computer literacy, particularly with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access), and possess the ability to transfer knowledge and skills in data collection, processing, and analysis. Very good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.
