Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. The Office of Staff Security (OSS) provides leadership on security policy and operational support to IOM programs, managing security risks. This National Security Officer role supports the Field Security Officer in the North East Region, focusing on security risk management and awareness.
Job Purpose
The National Security Officer provides expert support for all security-related aspects of IOM's operations and activities in the North East Region of Nigeria. This role assists the Field Security Officer in managing security risks to acceptable levels and establishing appropriate security awareness within the offices. The position is crucial for enabling the effective implementation and delivery of IOM programs by ensuring the safety and security of personnel, premises, and assets in a challenging operational environment. The officer contributes to maintaining security policies and operational support, safeguarding IOM's mission.
Responsibilities
The National Security Officer will liaise with security counterparts, monitor and analyze the security situation, and report significant events. Responsibilities include supporting the development and implementation of security plans, contingency plans, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The role involves assisting in Security Risk Management (SRM) processes, conducting security risk assessments for operational areas, and verifying compliance with UN Security Risk Management Measures (SRMM) and Residential Security Measures (RSM). The officer will support the Warden system, manage security incidents, prepare security reports, and provide security briefings and travel coordination. Additionally, the role includes supervising Field Security Associates, managing access control, and providing security policy guidance. The officer may also assist in investigations and act as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Field Security Officer.
Work Experience
Relevant professional experience in humanitarian, public, private, or corporate sectors is desirable. Experience in security programs, risk assessments, analysis, operational security risk management, investigation, and physical security is also desirable. UNDSS certifications (SCP, SAPP, TDC, SSAFE) are considered an advantage.

Ability to collaborate with government security counterparts and stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to maintain rational behavior and decision-making. Good political and social knowledge of the country. Ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
