Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) operates five Accommodation Centers in Greece, providing comprehensive services to Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC). These centers offer accommodation, basic needs, psychosocial and medical support, legal counselling, education, and cultural activities. This role is part of the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027" project, supporting the operation of the Kypseli II Accommodation Center. The Shelter Coordinator reports to the Project Coordinator.
Job Purpose
The Shelter Coordinator's primary purpose is to ensure the orderly and effective operation of the assigned Accommodation Center for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC). This involves comprehensive oversight of service provision, including accommodation, basic needs, catering, hygiene, and facilitating access to crucial legal, psychosocial, and medical support. The role is instrumental in fostering the well-being and development of UMC by ensuring their engagement in Greek learning programs, educational support, intercultural activities, and career guidance. The Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive living environment, managing the center's staff, and continuously monitoring the quality and appropriateness of all services. This position directly contributes to the successful implementation of project activities under the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027," upholding IOM's mandate to protect and integrate vulnerable minors.
Responsibilities
The Shelter Coordinator is responsible for the orderly operation and scientific supervision of the assigned Accommodation Center. Key duties include overseeing facility conditions, ensuring timely maintenance, high-quality food distribution, and maintaining cleanliness and security for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC). The role involves supervising UMC participation in programs, organizing monthly feedback meetings, and arranging escorts for personal status, healthcare, and educational activities. Administratively, the Coordinator prepares and supervises staff shift schedules, coordinates staff duties, and fosters effective communication and cooperation. They also plan individual performance evaluations and oversee the center's complaint mechanism. Financial and administrative management responsibilities include recording procurement needs, monitoring medical and consumable supplies, and coordinating the storage and distribution of essential items. The Coordinator manages administrative procedures for UMC reception, accommodation, and departure, and liaises with external public and private sector bodies on administrative matters. As Scientific Supervisor, the role entails collaborating with scientific staff to develop service and activity programs, planning and overseeing interdisciplinary meetings, and ensuring timely referrals of UMC to specialized external agencies when required.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required in child protection, unaccompanied minor protection, vulnerability management, international protection applicant reception, or beneficiary integration. Experience in multicultural environments and familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees are also essential.
Skills
Ability to work under minimal supervision and pressure, meeting deadlines. Strong work ethic, commitment to humanitarian principles, and adaptability to difficult conditions and varied shifts (including holidays/weekends/nights). Excellent organizational, facilitation, communication, writing, and presentation skills. Proficiency in negotiation, personal commitment, efficiency, and flexibility. Excellent computer literacy and proficient use of IT equipment.
