Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) supports community resilience and addresses migration drivers. The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), a highly climate-vulnerable nation, faces severe food insecurity due to environmental degradation, impacting health and livelihoods. IOM is implementing initiatives to strengthen climate-resilient food production systems, requiring participatory mapping and site selection.
Job Purpose
This role supports IOM's initiatives in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) by leading participatory mapping and site selection for climate-resilient food systems. The consultant will identify priority locations for indigenous food cultivation, assess environmental suitability, and ensure alignment with local priorities. The assignment aims to inform current food security and climate adaptation programs, providing an evidence base for future interventions. The work involves close coordination with national and local stakeholders, contributing to enhanced human security and reduced migration pressures driven by environmental stressors.
Responsibilities
The consultant will produce an inception report detailing methodology and stakeholder engagement plans. This will be followed by participatory mapping and site identification reports for Majuro and Wotje Atolls, including field observations, consultations, and site profiles. A key output includes designing and delivering a training session on participatory site selection for stakeholders. The consultant will also develop a draft and final validated Site Selection and Indigenous Crop Prioritisation Report, synthesizing findings and providing practical recommendations for implementation, ensuring stakeholder validation.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of experience in climate adaptation, food security, or community-based natural resource management is required. Proven experience in participatory mapping, site assessments, and stakeholder consultations is essential. Experience in small island or Pacific contexts is considered an asset.
