IOM
Homebased Consultant - Entrepreneurship Financing Mapping
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN-related agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. It works with partners to save lives, protect people on the move, and facilitate pathways for regular migration. The organization fosters an inclusive and supportive workplace to maximize the potential of migration.
Job Purpose
This consultancy supports the Better Regional Migration Management (BRMM) program, funded by FCDO, which aims to enhance labor migration governance and protect migrant workers' rights in East and Horn of Africa. The role specifically contributes to the 'Skills to Employment' phase by mapping early-stage entrepreneurship financing mechanisms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. This mapping is crucial for linking program participants, particularly youth who have developed business ideas through IOM's incubator program, with sustainable funding opportunities. The goal is to build the sustainability of the Youth Business Incubator (YBI) program and facilitate transformative economic growth through entrepreneurship.
Responsibilities
The consultant will conduct comprehensive research to map entrepreneurship financing opportunities for early-stage entrepreneurs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Uganda. This involves drafting an inception report detailing the methodology and assessment criteria, followed by primary and secondary data collection. The consultant will create a preliminary mapping of grants, schemes, and loans, presenting it to country representatives and finalizing it based on feedback. The mapping should include a regional overview and country-specific sections, prioritizing an easily updatable format like PowerPoint. Key activities include developing the inception report, data collection, drafting and presenting the mapping, and finalizing the report within a two-month timeframe.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of research experience, including scoping research with published reports, is necessary. Knowledge of private sector engagement developments is required. Experience with youth and startup promotion, or in entrepreneurship ecosystem/market systems development, is advantageous.
Skills
Excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills, including desk research, instrument development, data collection, systematization, and analysis.
