Organizational Context
The Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa (MPRR-SSA), funded by the European Union, is IOM’s flagship initiative supporting vulnerable migrants across 16 countries. In The Gambia, IOM focuses on post-arrival assistance and sustainable individual reintegration. This role supports the implementation of the project by strengthening partnerships with government, civil society, and local actors, and providing technical and administrative support for project activities.
Job Purpose
This Project Assistant role is crucial for the successful implementation of the Migrant Protection, Return and Reintegration Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa (MPRR-SSA) in The Gambia. The primary purpose is to contribute to strengthening the capacity and partnerships of national and local stakeholders involved in migrant protection and reintegration. The role will provide essential technical and administrative support to project activities, ensuring that efforts to protect vulnerable migrants and facilitate the sustainable reintegration of returnees are effective and well-coordinated. By fostering collaboration with government bodies, civil society organizations, and other partners, the position directly contributes to making return safer, more dignified, and sustainable for vulnerable individuals.
Responsibilities
The Project Assistant will provide comprehensive support to capacity-building initiatives aimed at enhancing the reintegration of returning migrants and strengthening national structures. This includes assisting in mapping socio-economic profiles of return areas to identify needs and service gaps, and supporting the identification and engagement of relevant government and non-governmental actors in migration governance. The role involves contributing to the development of national coordination structures and referral mechanisms for returnees, particularly vulnerable groups. Organizing and facilitating capacity-building activities such as workshops and training, and developing training materials are key duties. The assistant will also support reporting, monitoring, and liaison activities with stakeholders, represent IOM at coordination meetings, and contribute to assessing the impact of capacity-building efforts.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in migration issues, project development, implementation, management, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation is required. Experience in partnership development, stakeholder engagement, organizing workshops, and conducting training is also necessary. Familiarity with migration issues in The Gambia and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications are essential.
