This role, within the Member State and Stakeholder Engagement Division, supports the Executive Office by ensuring effective coordination, communication, and coherence across Headquarters, Regional, and Country Offices, specifically for South America.
Job Purpose
The Regional Desk Officer (South America) supports the Executive Office in providing institutional guidance, setting goals, and maintaining global oversight of IOM's activities. The primary purpose is to ensure effective coordination, communication, and coherence among Headquarters, Regional Offices, and Country Offices, specifically for the South America region and potentially other sub-regions. This role integrates regional perspectives into global strategies, facilitates information flow, and enhances IOM's operational effectiveness and strategic alignment across its various levels, contributing to the organization's overall mandate in migration.
Responsibilities
The Regional Desk Officer contributes regional expertise to the Executive Office, advising on policy and strategic matters, and preparing briefings for senior leadership on regional and national issues. The role involves coordinating efforts to ensure regional concerns are reflected in global forums and bilateral meetings, and maintaining liaison with Permanent Missions, governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations. Key duties include supporting IOM Governing Bodies, contributing regional expertise to consultative processes, and fostering intra- and inter-regional coherence. The officer serves as a regional resource for HQ and field offices on publications, donor relations, and communications, ensuring consistency and credibility. Additionally, the role provides assistance and guidance to Regional and Country Offices, promoting strategic partnerships and new program activities, facilitating cross-regional sharing of experiences, and strengthening long-term policy capacities within the region. The officer also supports senior leadership at international and regional conferences.
Work Experience
Required experience includes the field of migration issues, operational and field experience, IOM project development, and management. Experience in international relations, migration, and international development matters is essential. Extensive experience in fundraising, public relations, and liaising with governmental, diplomatic, and international institutions is also necessary. Knowledge and experience of regional issues are considered an advantage.
Skills
Sound knowledge of the broad range of migration-related subject areas dealt with by the Organization.
