Mali's strategic location as a crossroads for migration routes makes it a key country of origin, transit, and destination. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Mali, through its Data and Research unit, analyzes migration trends to inform policy. Building national capacity in data collection, analysis, and dissemination, supported by a pool of qualified consultants, is crucial for effective migration monitoring and decision-making.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen the capacity for data collection and analysis within IOM Mali's Data and Research unit. The role will support quantitative and qualitative surveys, ensuring the preparation, implementation, and analysis of collected data are robust. By providing technical expertise, the consultant will contribute to a better understanding of migration dynamics in Mali. This includes developing data collection tools, training enumerators, conducting qualitative analysis, and supporting quantitative data analysis. The ultimate goal is to produce evidence-based insights that inform policy and decision-making, facilitating a more informed approach to migration management in a complex and evolving environment.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Data and Research, the consultant will provide technical support for qualitative data collection and analysis. Key duties include designing and revising data collection tools (questionnaires, interview guides), participating in sampling methodologies and technical protocols, and preparing training materials for field enumerators. The consultant will also support the training and operational coordination of data collection teams, conduct qualitative surveys (semi-structured interviews, focus groups), and perform qualitative data analysis. Additionally, they will support descriptive quantitative data analysis, produce analytical notes and summaries for reports, and develop data storytelling approaches to visualize findings. Contributions to quantitative data analysis, including coherence checks and report preparation with statistical elements, are also expected. Other assigned tasks by the supervisor will be performed.
Work Experience
Proven experience in conducting qualitative surveys and familiarity with data collection tools (Kobo, ODK) and qualitative approaches are essential. Strong report writing and analytical skills, particularly for thematic migration analyses, are required. Experience in implementing and monitoring data collection operations in humanitarian contexts is necessary. Good computer skills (Windows, Office, Internet) are expected.
