Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. This role is part of the COMPASS Initiative, funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by IOM. The position operates within the IOM Mission in Mali, under the direct supervision of the Senior Protection Reporting Assistant and general supervision of the Protection Coordinator.
Job Purpose
This role supports the identification and care of vulnerable migrants in Mali as part of the COMPASS Initiative. The Assistant Protection will contribute to direct assistance and follow-up processes, facilitate family tracing when necessary, and refer migrants to appropriate services. The position involves coordinating with other IOM units, assisting with the departure of vulnerable migrants, and maintaining the IOM database. The role also contributes to protection activities reporting and liaises with protection service partners, ensuring effective support for vulnerable individuals throughout their migration journey.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Protection will identify and assist vulnerable migrants in transit or upon arrival in Mali, detecting vulnerabilities and providing direct support. Responsibilities include following up on assistance processes with other IOM units, conducting family tracing if needed, and referring migrants to appropriate services with follow-up. The role involves coordinating with operations for the departure of vulnerable migrants, regularly updating the IOM database, and contributing to narrative reports and meeting minutes for protection activities. Additionally, the Assistant Protection will liaise with protection service partners and participate in internal and external coordination meetings.
Work Experience
Requires at least two years of professional experience in an NGO or UN agency. Experience in an international organization or UN agency is desirable. Proficiency in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer) is essential.
