Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is the leading UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. It works with partners to save lives, protect people on the move, and facilitate pathways for regular migration. This role contributes to the Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery (DHRR), specifically the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) unit, focusing on enhancing a Drupal portal.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to significantly improve the usability, navigation, content discovery, visual design, and search experience of an existing Drupal portal. The UI/UX Designer will be responsible for understanding the Drupal ecosystem and designing interfaces that are practical for implementation using Drupal's core features and components. The role involves designing various page types, reusable Drupal-friendly components, and responsive layouts for all devices. A key focus is on creating accessible, SEO-friendly UI structures and optimizing the faceted full-text search experience. The designer will collaborate closely with developers, content editors, and product owners to ensure designs are user-centered, feasible, and aligned with technical requirements, ultimately enhancing the portal's effectiveness for users and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
The UI/UX Designer Consultant will conduct a comprehensive UX review of the existing Drupal site, identifying usability, accessibility, navigation, and design issues, while assessing Drupal implementation constraints. This will be followed by stakeholder consultations to gather user needs and pain points, leading to prioritized recommendations. The consultant will then propose improvements to information architecture, navigation, and user journeys, developing wireframes for key templates and user flows. Design of reusable Drupal-friendly components, user-friendly search pages with faceted filters, and responsive layouts for desktop, tablet, and mobile will be undertaken. Finally, the consultant will prepare developer-ready design specifications, assets, and annotations, providing implementation support and reviewing the final delivered product.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 5 years of professional UI/UX design experience, with proven experience designing websites, portals, or digital platforms built with Drupal. Experience in designing faceted search, full-text search, advanced filtering, or data discovery interfaces is essential. The ability to prepare developer-ready design handover packages is also required.
Skills
Proficiency in UI/UX design principles, including responsive and mobile-first design. Demonstrated understanding of CMS-based design and component-based structures, with familiarity with Drupal's ecosystem (content types, Views, Paragraphs, Layout Builder). Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+) and SEO-friendly UI design. Proficiency in design tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch. Ability to translate user needs and technical constraints into practical, usable designs.
