Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Guatemala collaborates with the state, particularly the Ministry of Health, to strengthen health responses in contexts of high human mobility. Funded by the Global Fund, the IOM implements a project to improve access to prevention, diagnosis, and care services for migrant populations, returnees, and host communities in transit and border areas.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen the community and territorial implementation of a project focused on emergency response to HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria in critical migration transit points in Mesoamerica. The role will involve intensive fieldwork in prioritized municipalities of San Marcos and Chiquimula, facilitating health promotion and education activities, supporting local health services and organizations, and coordinating with community actors. The objective is to contribute to a health response that is closer, more timely, and culturally relevant for migrant populations, returnees, and host communities, ensuring improved access to prevention, diagnosis, referral, and continuity of care.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include developing and implementing community-based health promotion and education activities on HIV, TB, syphilis, and hepatitis B/C for migrant populations, returnees, and host communities. The role involves supporting the organization of educational sessions and capacity-building activities for health personnel and community leaders. Additionally, responsibilities include providing operational support to health services for prevention and referral actions, coordinating the distribution of prevention supplies, identifying health vulnerabilities, and facilitating timely referrals. The consultant will maintain accurate records of activities, coordinate with project staff, local health services, and community actors, and prepare progress reports. Effective coordination, timely reporting, and adherence to technical and administrative guidelines are crucial performance indicators.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in health promotion, community work, or support to health services is required. Experience in implementing community activities, health education, or prevention actions targeting vulnerable populations is essential. Prior experience working and coordinating with health services, community actors, local organizations, or public institutions is considered an advantage.
Skills
Strong communication, facilitation, and community education skills. Ability to work in a team, coordinate inter-institutionally, and liaise with community actors. Capacity for organizing activities, maintaining accurate records, and preparing timely follow-up reports. Proficiency in Spanish (oral and written) is required; knowledge of Mayan or other relevant local languages is an advantage.
