Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN-related agency focused on promoting humane and orderly migration. It collaborates with governments and partners to save lives, protect migrants, and facilitate regular migration pathways. The Media and Communications Associate role supports the management of media and communications functions within the IOM Panama office, reporting to the Chief of Mission and the National Project Officer.
Job Purpose
The Media and Communications Associate is responsible for supporting the management of media and communications functions within the IOM Panama office. This role contributes to the organization's mission by assisting in the implementation of communication strategies, both internal and external, and supporting the development of its digital presence. The associate will help execute visibility campaigns, create compelling content, and manage social media platforms to promote IOM's programs and initiatives. By ensuring consistent brand messaging and proactively identifying new communication opportunities, the role aims to enhance IOM's outreach and impact in promoting humane and orderly migration.
Responsibilities
Assist in implementing and monitoring communication activities and supporting event organization. Support the execution of internal and external communication strategies, including the digital component. Aid in promotion and visibility campaigns for IOM programs, engaging with counterparts and media. Contribute to creating migrant life stories and basic video editing. Assist in producing public materials, press releases, website content, and managing social media platforms (web page, YouTube, Instagram). Draft and distribute newsletters and press releases, adhering to IOM style and brand guidelines. Proactively identify new communication actions aligned with the Regional Communication Strategy. Support website updates, event information, and media lists. Participate in interagency communication coordination meetings as assigned. Perform other duties as directed by supervisors.
Work Experience
Experience in communication, advertising, public relations, or journalism is required. Demonstrated understanding of gender approaches, interculturality, human rights, and communication for development is necessary. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and knowledge of spreadsheet and data analysis are also needed.
Skills
Familiarity with migration-related subject areas. Knowledge of UN and IOM communications and brand guidelines. Experience in communication, advertising, public relations, or journalism. Understanding of gender approaches, interculturality, human rights, and communication for development. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis.
