Organizational Context
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading UN agency for migration, promoting humane and orderly migration globally. The Regional Office for Asia-Pacific (ROAP) and its Data Hub (RDH) focus on using and monitoring migration data for planning and policy-making. This internship supports the RDH's mission to enhance data collection, analysis, and Information Management (IM) capacity across the region.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to attract talented students and graduates interested in migration and information management. The role supports the Regional Data Hub (RDH) in Bangkok, Thailand, by assisting with the compilation, cleaning, and analysis of migration-related data. The intern will contribute to evidence-based discussions on migration by supporting data collection initiatives, improving IM capacity, and ensuring the harmonization of methodologies. This position offers a valuable learning opportunity to gain practical experience in migration data management within an international organization, contributing to IOM's efforts to understand and address migration challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the Regional Data Hub's Information Management Officer in various tasks. This includes compiling and cleaning data for DTM and other IM activities, assisting with survey templates, and organizing data. The role involves identifying and reviewing new IM tools, coordinating with field colleagues for updates, and documenting lessons learned. Responsibilities also include updating and testing ODK/Kobo survey forms, preparing basic data tabulations for reports and information products, and supporting the production of reports, profiles, and maps. Additionally, the intern will provide basic support for data entry and database use in field missions and assist with data quality checks.
Work Experience
Requires academic exposure to Information Management, including data handling and organizing information flows. Basic familiarity with IM systems and processes is needed, along with foundational skills in data visualization and presentation. A demonstrated interest in migration research is essential. Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools is considered an advantage.
Skills
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher). Advanced English writing and communication skills. Knowledge of quantitative statistical data analysis (social science, human mobility, migration). Adaptability to international, multicultural environments. Strong teamwork and communication abilities. Familiarity with data analysis and visualization programs is advantageous.
