Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a leading UN agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. It provides data and research analytics to inform policies, save lives, and facilitate regular migration pathways. The Department of Data, Insight and Policy spearheads these efforts, comprising the Migration and Displacement Data and Research Analytics Division (MDDRAD) and the Global Data Institute (GDI). This role sits within MDDRAD, under the supervision of the Director of DDIP.
Job Purpose
This role is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the Migration and Displacement Data and Research Analytics Division (MDDRAD) and the Global Data Institute (GDI). The incumbent will lead institutional efforts in migration and displacement data analytics, strategic research, and foresight, ensuring alignment with IOM's operational needs and strategic objectives. The purpose is to position IOM as a global reference for migration and displacement evidence, driving data-driven decision-making and anticipating future trends. The role involves overseeing resource management, fostering a high-performance team culture, and ensuring the quality of flagship publications and analytical platforms.
Responsibilities
The Chief, MDDRAD, is responsible for setting the strategic vision and direction for the Division and the Global Data Institute, translating IOM's strategy into an ambitious agenda at the frontier of migration and displacement evidence. This includes leading the development of multi-year workplans, championing strategic foresight and anticipatory action modelling, and advising senior leadership on the use of data and evidence. The role oversees the effective management of human, financial, and institutional resources, fostering a high-performance, inclusive team culture and ensuring the quality of outputs like the World Migration Report and Missing Migrants Project. Additionally, the incumbent drives the integration of advanced data science and AI into research and data infrastructure, represents IOM in relevant forums, cultivates partnerships, and leads resource mobilization efforts.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of ten years of progressive senior leadership experience in migration, displacement, or related international policy fields. This includes proven leadership in managing complex units, strategic planning, resource mobilization, building high-level partnerships, strategic thinking, and effective engagement with senior governmental and intergovernmental audiences.
