IOM
Intern - Artificial Intelligence (AI) Solutions And Operational Support
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. It supports governments and migrants, saves lives, and addresses displacement. The Socioeconomic Inclusion and Labour Migration Unit (LMI) focuses on employability, entrepreneurship, and social cohesion, with a growing emphasis on optimizing processes through artificial intelligence. This internship supports the LMI unit in Ecuador.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Socioeconomic Inclusion and Labour Migration Unit (LMI) in Ecuador by contributing to various activities, particularly those focused on optimizing technological processes through artificial intelligence applied to the Enterprise Development Fund (EDF). The role will assist in enhancing operational efficiency and traceability of institutional processes. Interns are expected to gain practical knowledge in AI-supported operational improvements, strengthen technical skills in AI and automation, improve data management and analytical capabilities, and develop documentation and knowledge-sharing skills within an international multicultural environment. The position contributes to IOM's strategies for promoting labor inclusion for migrants and vulnerable populations, and strengthening host communities.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the mapping and documentation of operational processes within the Enterprise Development Fund (EDF), identifying areas for automation and efficiency. Responsibilities include assisting in the design, testing, and development of basic AI agents (e.g., chatbots, prompt-based tools) to optimize tasks like information organization and report generation. The role involves contributing to data organization, cleaning, and basic analysis, as well as preparing dashboards and reports for decision-making. Collaboration with technical and non-technical teams to translate operational needs into technological solutions is key. The intern will also document workflows, tools, and prototypes developed, ensuring knowledge transfer and potential scalability, and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Required experience includes basic to intermediate programming knowledge (preferably Python), familiarity with generative AI tools (prompt engineering, chatbots, automations), and experience with spreadsheets or basic data analysis tools. Participation in relevant academic, volunteer, or internship projects related to digital transformation or automation is beneficial. An interest in entrepreneurship, development projects, or international cooperation is also desirable.
Skills
Key skills include analytical and problem-solving abilities, a strong learning capacity and adaptability to new technologies, and a basic understanding of AI and automation concepts. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to clearly document processes are important.
