Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has been active in Papua New Guinea (PNG) since 2001, providing humanitarian relief and capacity building for the government. The organization supports displaced populations, assists stranded migrants, and protects vulnerable groups through various programs, including disaster management and counter-trafficking. This role supports the Emergencies & Disaster Management (EDM) programme, with a focus on the Tropical Cyclone Maila response.
Job Purpose
This role provides essential day-to-day programmatic support to the Emergencies & Disaster Management (EDM) unit, with a specific emphasis on the ongoing Tropical Cyclone Maila response in Papua New Guinea. The Senior Project Associate ensures the high-quality, accurate, and consistent delivery of activities critical to IOM’s emergency operations and the broader humanitarian response. Working under the guidance of the Chief of Mission and direct supervision of the National Emergency Support Officer, the position contributes directly to life-saving assistance, coordination with authorities, and support for affected communities through shelter, food, WASH, and protection interventions. The role is key to maintaining operational effectiveness during a critical emergency.
Responsibilities
The Senior Project Associate will provide programmatic support to the EDM Unit, ensuring high-quality activity implementation. Key duties include preparing situation updates and summaries from field information, assisting with operational, administrative, and logistical requests, and coordinating with senior staff. The role involves routing and filing documents for emergency activities, taking notes and preparing reports for external meetings, and assisting with planning and executing field missions to affected areas for assessments and monitoring. Additionally, the position supports logistics for field missions, including packing relief items and preparing deployment materials, and aids in the distribution of emergency relief supplies by maintaining accurate records and basic reporting. The role also includes organizing meetings and performing other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Requires relevant professional experience in project support, emergency operations, humanitarian assistance, logistics, or programme administration. Experience supporting field-based operations, especially in emergency or disaster response contexts, is highly desirable. Prior experience with international organizations or humanitarian programmes is advantageous.
