Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Cameroon seeks a Laboratory Technologist in Yaounde/Douala. This role provides essential technical support to laboratory services, specifically for Migration Health Assessments (HAP) and other programs managed by the IOM Migration Health Division. The position operates under the direct supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technologist.
Job Purpose
The Laboratory Technologist will provide crucial technical support to the IOM Migration Health Division's laboratory services in Yaounde and Douala, Cameroon. This role is integral to the successful implementation of Migration Health Assessments (HAP) and other health-related programs. The incumbent will perform a range of laboratory procedures, contribute to quality management systems, and ensure the accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of results. By maintaining laboratory equipment, managing stock, and adhering to biosafety standards, the technologist directly contributes to the health and well-being of migrants and beneficiaries, ensuring high standards of service delivery and operational efficiency within the IOM health framework.
Responsibilities
Perform pre-examination, examination, and post-examination laboratory procedures using standard equipment. Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of laboratory quality management systems, potentially serving as a focal point for specific quality system essentials. Strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and biosafety measures to ensure the quality and safety of laboratory operations. Organize and manage assigned laboratory stations for accurate and timely results. Conduct quality control and assurance activities, documenting all results. Facilitate regular maintenance of laboratory equipment and monitor stock levels of equipment and consumables. Report any operational issues, including equipment, stock, or biosafety concerns, to the laboratory supervisor. Maintain organized record-keeping and information management systems for data collection, analysis, and reporting. Assist in developing and updating SOPs and participate in service system improvements. Manage client expectations by prioritizing needs and providing services with respect for patient dignity, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Ensure compliance with IOM instructions and complete mandatory training.
Work Experience
Requires three years of relevant clinical laboratory experience for Bachelor's degree holders, or five years for diploma holders, preferably in a busy institutional laboratory. Experience should include clinical laboratory techniques, knowledge of quality management systems, biosafety principles, and computer literacy for data management. Awareness of the laboratory's role in health systems is beneficial.
