Job Purpose
This role provides essential technical and administrative support to the IOM Migration Health Centre Laboratory in Manila, Philippines. Working under the supervision of the Senior Laboratory Technologist and Chief Migration Health Officer, the position is crucial for the effective operation of laboratory services supporting Migration Health Assessments (HAP) and other IOM health programs. The purpose is to ensure accurate and timely processing of laboratory specimens, maintain quality assurance, and contribute to the overall efficiency and reliability of the laboratory's contribution to IOM's mission of supporting migrants' health and well-being.
Responsibilities
The Laboratory Assistant will provide technical support for laboratory operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of specimens like blood, urine, and sputum according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Key duties include preparing reagents and media, maintaining biosafety protocols, and adhering to quality assurance standards. The role involves identifying quality or safety gaps and contributing to corrective actions. Responsibilities also extend to improving workflow efficiency by managing request forms and coordinating client scheduling, offering recommendations to enhance service delivery and turnaround times. The assistant will support quality control activities, participate in updating SOPs, monitor consumables and equipment, and maintain organized laboratory records.
Work Experience
Required experience includes working as a phlebotomist in a tertiary hospital or a busy laboratory setting. Experience in sputum collection is considered an advantage.
Skills
Valid medical technology license in the Philippines. Proficiency in HIV testing is advantageous. Possesses accuracy and attention to detail. Demonstrates excellent venipuncture skills. Experienced in using Laboratory Information Systems.
