Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) seeks a National Medical Officer to provide occupational health services and support. This role operates under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer and the overall supervision of the Director of the Staff Health and Welfare Division in Geneva, contributing to the well-being of IOM employees and non-staff across various regions.
Job Purpose
The National Medical Officer is responsible for delivering comprehensive occupational health services and support to IOM employees and non-staff. This includes managing medical examinations, assessing fitness for work, and advising on health, safety, and welfare matters. The role also involves managing medical insurance claims, providing support for occupational accidents and illnesses, and overseeing sick leave management. Additionally, the officer will coordinate medical travel, evacuations, and health risk assessments, contributing to a safe and healthy working environment for all personnel within their designated area of responsibility, ensuring compliance with IOM policies and relevant health and safety legislation.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include managing and reviewing medical examinations for staff and non-staff, assessing fitness for work, and reporting on matters affecting health and safety. The role involves assessing medical insurance eligibility and exclusions, responding to insurance queries, and explaining decisions to insured staff. The officer will assist with occupational accident and illness claims, manage sick leave, and coordinate return-to-work plans, including joint case management for mental health conditions. Responsibilities extend to assessing documentation for special education grants and disabled child allowances, and preparing recommendations for disability benefits. The officer will also recommend and coordinate medical travel and evacuations, manage occupational health aspects of these cases, and provide occupational health and safety management advice. Developing and implementing health promotion projects, conducting health risk assessments for travel, and providing travel health advice are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in occupational health is required, with a focus on travel and tropical medicine. Experience liaising with international organizations is considered an asset.
Skills
Broad knowledge of occupational health theories and techniques, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of occupational disorders. Familiarity with occupational health issues in crisis and developing countries. General knowledge of work environments and regulatory requirements. Understanding of legal and ethical issues in occupational health care practice.
