Job Purpose
The purpose of this Interpreter role is to facilitate effective communication between IOM staff, service providers, and Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) residing in IOM Accommodation Centers in Greece. The incumbent will provide crucial interpretation and translation services, ensuring UMC can access essential support such as legal counselling, medical assistance, educational programs, and psychosocial support. This role directly contributes to IOM's mandate of promoting humane and orderly migration by enabling UMC to understand their rights, opportunities, and integrate into their new environment. By bridging language barriers, the Interpreter ensures UMC receive comprehensive care, fostering their well-being and successful adjustment within the framework of the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027". This position is vital for the smooth operation of the shelters and the delivery of critical services to vulnerable minors.
Responsibilities
The Interpreter will primarily facilitate effective verbal communication between IOM staff, external service providers, and Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) within the accommodation centers. This involves providing accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation during daily interactions, legal counselling sessions, medical appointments, and psychosocial support activities, ensuring UMC fully comprehend information and can express their needs and concerns clearly. A key aspect of the role is to act as a cultural mediator, assisting UMC in adjusting to their new environment and helping staff better understand migrants' cultural perspectives and perceptions, thereby fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Furthermore, the Interpreter will translate various written information materials, documents, and notices for dissemination to UMC, ensuring vital information regarding services, rights, and opportunities is accessible in their native language. They will also facilitate communication between minors and various public authorities, local services, and other relevant bodies they come into contact with, ensuring smooth access to necessary support and resources. This comprehensive linguistic and cultural support is crucial for the UMC's well-being, integration, and ability to navigate their new surroundings effectively. The incumbent will also perform other duties as assigned to support project activities and the overall operational needs of the shelters.
Work Experience
Previous experience in a similar interpretation role, potentially with relevant certification or training, is preferred. Familiarity with providing direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees is also preferred. Experience working effectively in a multi-cultural environment is considered an advantage.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office). Willingness to work flexible shifts, including day, night (emergencies), holidays, and weekends. A valid driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience is an advantage.
