Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN-related agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. In Greece, IOM operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC), providing essential services including accommodation, basic needs, legal and psychosocial support, and integration assistance. This role is situated within one of these shelters, reporting to the Shelter Coordinator.
Job Purpose
This Social Worker role is crucial for the well-being and development of Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) residing in IOM's Accommodation Centers in Athens. The primary purpose is to provide comprehensive assistance, care, and services to these minors, ensuring their safety, support, and integration into the local community. The role contributes to the successful implementation of the "Operation of K.F.A.A. Ilion" project under the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027". By facilitating access to services, supporting personal development, and ensuring a stable environment, the Social Worker aims to foster the gradual autonomy and smooth transition of UMCs towards adulthood.
Responsibilities
The Social Worker is responsible for the overall care and support of unaccompanied children within the assigned Accommodation Center. Key duties include conducting social history assessments, facilitating access to community services and vocational training, and organizing individual and group sessions for social support and problem-solving. The role involves supporting children's social network development through community partnerships and assisting with their transition to adulthood. Responsibilities also encompass managing individual child files, conducting Best Interest Assessments (BIA), and ensuring all necessary documentation is maintained for donor purposes. The Social Worker will act as a primary contact person for assigned children, supporting their integration into shelter activities and preparing them for departure. Additionally, the role involves escorting children to appointments, distributing essential supplies, reinforcing shelter rules, and performing general support duties as assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of one year of relevant professional experience is desirable. Previous experience working specifically with children is considered an asset.
Skills
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, personal commitment, efficiency, and flexibility. Ability to work with minimal supervision and under difficult conditions. Good computer literacy. Willingness to work flexible hours, including shifts, holidays, weekends, and night emergencies. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is advantageous.
