Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. The African Migration Report (AMR) is a collaborative project between IOM and the African Union Commission, aiming to provide evidence-based analysis and shape migration narratives on the continent. This role contributes to the AMR III edition, focusing on deepening regional analysis of migration dynamics.
Job Purpose
This consultancy role involves co-editing the Third Edition of the African Migration Report (AMR III). The co-editor will be responsible for reviewing and providing substantive editorial comments on assigned chapters, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and quality. The purpose is to contribute to the report's objective of challenging dominant narratives on African migration, highlighting its complexity, and generating actionable knowledge to inform policies and programs. The role supports evidence-based policymaking and promotes cross-sectoral solutions to mobility challenges, while also consolidating collaboration between AU, IOM, and AfDB.
Responsibilities
The consultant will serve as a co-editor for the AMR III, working on three assigned chapters. Key responsibilities include providing timely and substantive editorial comments on first, second, and final drafts, ensuring alignment with the analytical framework and editorial guidance. This involves overseeing peer review processes, coordinating with the editor-in-chief on editorial notes and style guides, and ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and quality of chapter content. The role requires applying editorial standards for coherence and consistency across chapters and facilitating the integration of comments and revisions through close collaboration with the editorial team and contributors.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience with a Master's degree, or 5 years with a PhD, is required in academic research related to development, migration, or similar topics. Proven experience in editing academic journals and publications is also necessary.
Skills
Ability to conduct research and strategic dialogue on migration-related issues. Effective teamwork and independent work capabilities. Strong communication skills. Excellent analytical writing skills in English. Knowledge of French is an advantage.
