Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency since 2016, promotes humane and orderly migration. The African Migration Report (AMR) is a collaborative project between IOM and the African Union Commission, aiming to deconstruct negative migration narratives in Africa by fostering evidence-based policy and research. This role contributes to the Special Liaison Office in Addis Ababa.
Job Purpose
This role serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the third edition of the African Migration Report (AMR III). The primary purpose is to provide strategic editorial leadership, ensuring the report's overall quality, coherence, and readiness for publication. The role will guide the consolidation and refinement of contributions from various experts, aiming to produce a unified, analytically sound, and contextually appropriate publication. By challenging dominant narratives and amplifying African perspectives, the report will inform policies, programmes, and investments at national, regional, and continental levels, supporting evidence-based policymaking and promoting cross-sectoral solutions to Africa’s mobility challenges.
Responsibilities
The Editor-in-Chief will provide strategic editorial leadership for the development and finalization of AMR III, ensuring coherence and alignment with project objectives. This includes reviewing proposed chapters, developing editorial guidelines for contributors, and overseeing the integration of feedback from experts, co-editors, and reviewers. The role requires ensuring the content is analytically sound, contextually appropriate, and accurately reflects African migration dynamics. Substantive editorial comments will be provided on all chapter drafts. The consultant will coordinate with IOM to monitor progress, manage timelines, and may contribute to dissemination and visibility efforts, including supporting launch events and policy dialogues.
Work Experience
Requires at least 10 years of proven academic research experience in development, migration, or related topics in Africa. Essential experience includes editing academic journals or publications. The role also requires the ability to conduct research and strategic dialogue on migration issues, strong communication, and excellent analytical writing skills in English.
