Organizational Context
Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. Working with governmental and non-governmental partners, IOM provides services and advice to governments and migrants. This role supports a project assisting International Protection Applicants in Ireland by providing cultural mediation services to facilitate their applications.
Job Purpose
This role serves as a Cultural Mediator and Consultant for International Protection Applicants (IPAs) in Ireland. The primary purpose is to facilitate the application process by providing crucial cultural mediation and interpretation services, bridging communication gaps between IPAs and the International Protection Office (IPO). The role directly supports the IPO in managing the daily flow of international protection applications, ensuring that applicants receive accurate information and assistance in their native language. By offering administrative and linguistic support, including help with form completion, and identifying potential vulnerabilities, the consultant contributes to the effective and humane processing of applications, aligning with IOM's mission to promote orderly migration.
Responsibilities
The Cultural Mediator will provide daily cultural mediation and interpretation services to International Protection Applicants (IPAs), facilitating communication with the International Protection Office (IPO) in their native language. This includes providing information and assisting with application forms, ensuring neutrality, accuracy, impartiality, and confidentiality. The role involves identifying potential vulnerable cases and signposting beneficiaries to relevant services. Responsibilities also include assisting with data collection, case identification, and referrals through interpretation. The consultant will support the Project Management Team by preparing documentation, surveys, and statistics, and reporting regularly on performed activities. Any other related tasks as required will also be undertaken.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in cultural mediation within the framework of migrant assistance is required. Previous experience with international organizations, NGOs, EU Agencies, or Irish law enforcement/government departments is considered an asset.
Skills
Key skills include the ability to work with migrants and asylum seekers, strong interpersonal skills (empathy, emotional resilience), intercultural competence, and communication skills. Proficiency in culture-specific knowledge, conflict prevention/mitigation, and bridging language misunderstandings is essential. Psychological understanding, sensitivity, knowledge of Irish asylum procedures, excellent written/verbal communication, report writing, statistical work, and Microsoft Office proficiency are also required.
