Job Purpose
The Migration Health Officer is responsible for managing the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, South Africa, under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Chief Migration Health Officer. This role is critical in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of health assessment services to refugees and migrants, meeting the technical requirements of resettlement countries. The officer will oversee all aspects of the MHAC's operations, from medical examinations and testing to documentation and client care, contributing to IOM's mission of providing essential services and support to people on the move.
Responsibilities
Organize and supervise the MHAC's migration health assessment process, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, and pre-departure procedures. Conduct health assessments for refugees and migrants, ensuring compliance with resettlement country guidelines. Maintain MHAC infrastructure and equipment to professional standards. Coordinate staffing needs and supervise health and non-health personnel, ensuring performance evaluations and adherence to IOM standards. Develop and implement staff training strategies. Liaise with external providers and manage outsourced services. Ensure the confidentiality and security of migration health data. Oversee financial aspects, including budget preparation and cost-effective solutions. Coordinate procurement of medical supplies and equipment. Facilitate the integration of health assessment activities into broader IOM programming and advise on related health initiatives.
Work Experience
Requires professional clinical experience, preferably in a multidisciplinary hospital or international clinic setting. Experience in Migration Health Assessments, health program management, and project development is essential. Proven ability to establish partnerships with government and health institutions is needed. Knowledge of public health, patient safety, and infection prevention and control is required. Experience in migration health emergency response, and specialized clinical or public health degrees are advantageous.
