Job Purpose
This Project Assistant (Protection) role, covering paternity leave, is crucial for supporting the coordination of project activities focused on the assistance and protection of Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) residing in IOM-managed shelters in Greece. The position operates under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the National Project Officer (UMC Protection). The core purpose is to ensure the effective implementation of protection activities, facilitate the mainstreaming of protection principles across shelter operations, and contribute to a safe and supportive environment for UMCs. This involves assisting in the development and updating of standard operating procedures, providing technical guidance, and monitoring the delivery of services to meet the needs of vulnerable children.
Responsibilities
The Project Assistant will oversee the implementation and compliance of child protection policies within the shelters, ensuring adherence across all activities. Key duties include assisting in the coordination of protection activities, facilitating the exchange of best practices, and disseminating relevant information. The role involves proposing, drafting, and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidance notes for shelter operations. Providing technical advice and guidance to Shelter Coordinators on protection-related issues, including crisis management for UMCs, is essential. Regular on-site monitoring visits and participation in protection field meetings are required. The assistant will contribute to monthly project reports for the donor, verify supporting documentation, and maintain communication with counterpart donors, partners, and Greek national authorities. Support in recruitment processes, staff training, and monitoring, as well as identifying and proposing solutions for operational challenges, are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of related work experience in a humanitarian setting is required, with progressive experience in coordinating protection activities and a strong understanding of international protection protocols. Experience in a coordination or management role is necessary. Experience working in migrant accommodation facilities, particularly for UMCs, is preferred. Experience with nationally funded projects and liaising with governmental authorities and international organizations is advantageous.
