Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. It collaborates with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners, providing services and advice to governments and migrants. This role operates under the Chief of Mission in Tunisia, with direct supervision from the Head of Sub Office in Sfax and technical guidance from the Migration Health Officer.
Job Purpose
The Migration Health Physician is responsible for providing essential medical care within IOM clinics in Sfax and the Hzag Satellite Office, Tunisia. This role contributes to IOM's mandate of promoting humane and orderly migration by ensuring the health and well-being of migrants and vulnerable populations. The physician will conduct medical screenings, provide treatment, manage referrals, and support health-related programming, working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to deliver quality healthcare services and uphold IOM's commitment to supporting migrants.
Responsibilities
As a clinician, the Migration Health Physician will deliver healthcare activities to beneficiaries, including medical history review, vital signs monitoring, and thorough physical examinations. Responsibilities include interpreting diagnostic reports, prescribing treatment according to national standards, and providing patient counseling. The role involves facilitating referrals and transportation for critical cases, potentially acting as a medical escort. The physician will also support national staff, coordinate with outreach NGOs, maintain medical equipment, and ensure proper documentation and data entry into health databases. Additionally, the role includes liaising with local health authorities, assisting with project monitoring, disease outbreak surveillance, and participating in health awareness campaigns and coordination meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of clinical medical experience post-MD/MBBS is required. Previous experience in health-related programming, particularly with UN agencies or INGOs, is beneficial. Experience in public health, medical emergencies, or project development within an international organization is advantageous, as is trauma management experience.
Skills
In-depth knowledge of migration-related subjects, high integrity, understanding of ethical principles, respect for diversity, and ability to work with diverse populations. Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine, excellent organization and communication skills, and strong practical computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) are essential.
