Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the UN Migration Agency, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. The Regional Office for East, Horn, and Southern Africa oversees and supports IOM activities in the region, providing technical support to country offices. This role is within the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, a multi-partner initiative focused on improving migration management and addressing trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme, a regional initiative aimed at enhancing migration governance and combating trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants within the East and Horn of Africa. The purpose is to contribute to the programme's objectives by strengthening national and regional cooperation, improving prevention and protection mechanisms for vulnerable migrants, and ensuring effective assistance to victims. The role will involve coordinating activities, monitoring implementation, and liaising with various stakeholders to achieve these goals, ultimately upholding the human dignity and well-being of migrants.
Responsibilities
Assist in planning, coordinating, and monitoring programme activities, focusing on BMM thematic areas. Compile, analyze, and present financial and programme data for reporting. Monitor budget implementation and propose adjustments. Serve as a focal point for administrative coordination, liaising with internal units and external parties. Draft status reports, correspondence, and project documentation. Organize and support meetings, workshops, and training sessions. Respond to information requests and maintain project records. Liaise with local authorities, partners, UN agencies, and other stakeholders. Monitor implementing partners' compliance. Provide input for Standard Operating Procedures and concept papers. Assist in coordinating and monitoring the work of other staff, potentially supervising assigned personnel.
Work Experience
Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, UN agencies, and NGOs. Experience working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking, and other vulnerable groups. Prior work experience in a multicultural setting with international humanitarian organizations or government institutions is advantageous.
Skills
Good knowledge of the programme management cycle. Strong report writing and communication skills. Ability to prepare and present clear reports in English. Knowledge of donor management support, budgeting, and financial regulations. Proficiency in Microsoft applications and relational databases. Good analytical skills. Ability to work effectively under time pressure and in multicultural environments. Ability to collaborate with diverse partners including government, NGOs, and academic institutions.
