This role sits within the IOM Country Office in Papua New Guinea, reporting to the Chief of Mission and the Project Development and Reporting Officer.
Job Purpose
The National Media and Communications Officer supports the implementation of media and communications activities within the IOM Country Office in Papua New Guinea. This role is crucial for promoting a positive and accurate narrative on migration-related issues to the media, general public, UN partners, and other key stakeholders. The officer will assist in developing and executing external communications strategies, managing online presence, and supporting high-profile events and campaigns. By ensuring consistent brand application and effective outreach, the position contributes to enhancing IOM's visibility, strengthening partnerships, and advancing advocacy objectives related to migration.
Responsibilities
The National Media and Communications Officer will assist in implementing external communications strategies, aligning with IOM's priorities to promote accurate migration narratives. Responsibilities include preparing media lines during crises, providing communications input to senior management, and developing project-level communication plans. The role involves drafting and revising external content such as stories, blogs, and social media posts, and supporting the organization of visibility events and media interviews. Maintaining the CO's online presence, including social media and website content, and monitoring performance metrics are key duties. The officer will also ensure consistent application of IOM brand guidelines, support advocacy efforts, and strengthen media relations through outreach and response coordination. Additionally, the role requires gathering multimedia content from field activities, ensuring gender and diversity awareness in communications, and potentially supervising assigned staff.
Work Experience
Required experience includes roles as a writer, editor, and content producer/manager in international journalism or public information, preferably within the region. Experience in digital communications, social media, corporate writing, editing, managing donor visibility, and media liaison is essential. Experience in humanitarian communications and working within the UN or other international organizations is also valuable. Experience in the region or emergency settings is considered an advantage.
Skills
Key skills include demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, high professionalism, and the ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines in a complex environment. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for effective collaboration with diverse colleagues. Skills in graphic design (Adobe programs), photography, and videography (shooting and editing) are considered advantageous.
