Job Purpose
The National Media and Communications Officer will support the implementation of media and communications activities within the IOM Country Office (CO) in Papua New Guinea. This role is crucial for promoting an accurate narrative on migration-related issues through various channels, including media engagement, public outreach, and digital platforms. The officer will assist in developing and executing communication strategies, preparing materials for senior management, and ensuring consistent brand application. By strengthening media relations and maintaining the CO's online presence, the position contributes to enhancing IOM's visibility, advocating for its objectives, and fostering strategic partnerships.
Responsibilities
Assist in implementing the Country Office's external communications strategies, aligning with IOM's priorities to promote accurate narratives on migration with media, the public, and partners. Support the preparation of media lines during crises by compiling information and drafting inputs. Provide communications advice to the Senior Management Team. Assist in developing and implementing project-level communication plans. Draft and review external content, including stories, blogs, videos, and social media posts. Support the organization of visibility events and media interviews, preparing briefing materials. Maintain and manage the CO's online presence, including social media and website, to enhance digital outreach. Monitor and ensure consistent application of IOM brand guidelines across all platforms and events. Strengthen media links through outreach activities and managing media requests. Draft press releases, media packages, and support press briefings. Participate in UN Country Team communication groups. Undertake travel to gather multimedia content showcasing IOM activities, ensuring informed consent. Ensure gender, diversity, and inclusion awareness in all communications. Supervise assigned staff and contribute to knowledge sharing.
Work Experience
Experience is required in journalism and public information roles, including writing, editing, and content production, preferably in the region. Experience in digital communications, social media, corporate writing, managing donor visibility, and media liaison is essential. Experience in humanitarian communications and working within the UN or other international organizations is also valuable. Experience in the region or emergency settings is an advantage.
Skills
Skills in graphic design (Adobe programs), photography, and videography (shooting and editing) are advantageous. Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity are required. High professionalism, ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines in a complex environment, and strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across diverse cultures are essential.
