Job Purpose
The Regional Medical Officer's purpose is to ensure the health and well-being of IOM staff and their eligible dependents across the region. This involves providing comprehensive occupational medical services, managing health cases, overseeing medical insurance, and contributing to strategic health planning. The role requires close collaboration with headquarters, regional directors, and external health providers, while also engaging with other UN medical services and inter-agency health networks. The position plays a crucial part in policy development, emergency preparedness, and the implementation of health strategies to support IOM's mission and its personnel operating in diverse environments.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include overseeing medical examinations (entry, periodic, driver fitness, long-term sick leave, disability, independent), ensuring quality standards, and assessing fitness for duty. The role involves clinical duties such as consultations, emergency response, and follow-up care, alongside health education and promotion. Managing health insurance and claims, including reviewing submissions and liaising with providers, is essential. The officer will implement the regional Occupational Health Strategy, coordinate emergency medical support and evacuations, and provide pre-travel medical briefings. Additionally, responsibilities encompass advising HR and management on medical standards, participating in crisis preparedness, supervising medical clearances, and conducting health education programs. Reporting on medical trends, maintaining confidential records, and representing IOM in inter-agency forums are also critical duties.
Work Experience
Requires seven years of post-doctorate experience in clinical medicine. Experience in occupational health, travel medicine, preventive medicine, medical evacuations, mental health, and crisis management is advantageous. At least three years of supervisory experience with clinical staff and general office administration is needed. Experience with medical insurance and claims analysis is desirable.
Skills
Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to occupational health care practice is an asset.
