Cultural Mediator (hindi/Urdu)

Organizational Context

IOM Cyprus is establishing an Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Hub to offer safe, temporary accommodation and pre-departure support for migrants returning voluntarily, particularly vulnerable individuals and families. The Hub will coordinate with IOM units, national authorities, and partners to ensure beneficiaries' rights and facilitate dignified departures, operating in close alignment with IOM policies and procedures.

Job Purpose

This role serves as a Cultural Mediator (Hindi/Urdu) within the IOM Cyprus Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Hub. The primary purpose is to facilitate effective communication and understanding between IOM staff and migrants preparing for voluntary return. This involves providing crucial interpretation and cultural mediation services during various interactions, including individual and group sessions, and supporting the translation of essential information materials. The mediator will play a key role in building trust with beneficiaries, ensuring their needs are understood, and contributing to the overall objective of facilitating timely and dignified returns in a safe and supportive environment. The role is supervised by the Project Associate (AVR Hub) and works in coordination with the AVR team and technical units.

Responsibilities

The Cultural Mediator is responsible for providing interpretation and cultural mediation services to ensure clear communication between IOM staff and migrants, particularly during sessions and activities. This includes maintaining professional confidentiality and fostering positive relationships with beneficiaries and stakeholders to support project implementation. The role involves translating information materials and facilitating communication in Hindi/Urdu, objectively and impartially. Additionally, the mediator will support the AVR Hub's operations by assisting with pre-departure procedures and performing other assigned duties to ensure the smooth functioning of the facility and the well-being of migrants.

Work Experience

Previous work experience in a similar role is required. Experience in a multicultural environment is preferred. The candidate should possess adequate knowledge, education, and training to perform the essential functions of the position, along with strong work ethics and commitment to humanitarian principles.
