IOM Cyprus is establishing an Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Hub to provide temporary accommodation and pre-departure support for migrants returning voluntarily, focusing on vulnerable individuals and families. The Hub operates in line with IOM policies and in coordination with national authorities and partners.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) Hub in Cyprus, which offers dedicated, safe, and specialized temporary accommodation and pre-departure assistance for migrants returning voluntarily to their countries of origin. The Cultural Mediator will play a crucial role in facilitating communication and understanding between IOM staff and beneficiaries, particularly those in vulnerable situations. By providing interpretation and cultural mediation, the role ensures effective communication during various activities and sessions, supports the completion of pre-departure procedures, and contributes to timely and dignified departures. The position operates under the supervision of the National Project Officer and Project Associate (AVR Hub), coordinating closely with the AVR team and relevant technical units.
Responsibilities
The Cultural Mediator is responsible for providing interpretation and cultural mediation services to ensure effective communication between IOM staff and beneficiaries during individual and group sessions. This includes maintaining professional confidentiality and fostering positive relationships with beneficiaries, stakeholders, and humanitarian actors to support project activities. The role also involves translating information materials and documents for beneficiaries. Key duties include facilitating communication through interpretation and/or translation in a manner understood by beneficiaries, objectively and impartially. The position may also involve performing other assigned duties as required to support the AVR Hub's operations.
Work Experience
Previous work experience in a similar role is required. Experience in a multicultural environment is preferred. The candidate should possess adequate knowledge, education, and training to perform the essential functions of the position, along with computer literacy and a valid driver's license.
