Organizational Context
Established in 1951, IOM is a UN-related organization dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. As the leading UN agency in migration, it collaborates with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners, providing services and advice. This role sits within the IOM Country Office in Bangui, Central African Republic, reporting to the Chief of Mission.
Job Purpose
The Media and Communications Officer is responsible for managing and implementing media and communications activities within the IOM Country Office (CO). This involves coordinating external communications strategies to align with IOM's global priorities, ensuring an accurate narrative on migration issues is conveyed to media, the public, and partners. The role also involves acting as a spokesperson, providing strategic communication advice to senior management, and enhancing the CO's overall communication capacity. The officer will contribute to IOM's mission by effectively communicating its work and impact, particularly in the Central African Republic.
Responsibilities
Coordinate the implementation of external communications strategies, ensuring alignment with IOM's strategic priorities and promoting accurate narratives on migration. Act as the Country Office spokesperson, lead media content preparation, and support crisis communication efforts. Provide technical advice to senior management on strategic communications, ensuring high-quality media and public outreach. Supervise and manage media and communications staff, including social media and audio-visual officers, and enhance team capacity through training. Oversee all external communications content, including stories, blogs, videos, and social media, ensuring alignment with IOM's brand and strategic priorities. Support visibility events, assist the Chief of Mission in media engagements, and develop content for national, regional, and international campaigns. Manage the CO's online presence, strengthen media relations, draft key messages and statements, and engage with UN Country Team communication groups. Undertake travel to gather multimedia content, ensuring gender, diversity, and inclusion awareness in all communications.
Work Experience
Experience in international journalism and/or public information roles, including writing, editing, and content production. Experience in digital communications, social media, corporate writing, and media liaison is required. Experience in humanitarian communications, managing donor visibility, and working within the UN or other international organizations is also valuable. Experience in the region or emergency settings is an advantage.
Skills
Skills in graphic design (Adobe programs), photography, and videography (shooting and editing) are advantageous. Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity. High level of professionalism, ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a complex environment. Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across diverse cultures and professional backgrounds.
