Migration Health Nurse
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a leading UN agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. This role is situated within the migration reception centers in Kinshasa, DRC, reporting to the Chief of Mission and the National Medical Officer.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for supporting IOM's mission to provide essential health services to migrants and refugees within reception centers in Kinshasa, DRC. The Migration Health Nurse will execute daily nursing activities, conduct medical examinations, manage treatments, and provide vital health information and counseling. By ensuring adherence to international health standards and facilitating smooth pre-departure procedures, the position directly contributes to the well-being of vulnerable populations and supports IOM's commitment to humane migration management. The role also involves meticulous documentation, data collection, and collaboration with various partners to ensure comprehensive care throughout the migration process.
Responsibilities
Perform daily nursing activities including medical examinations (vital signs, anthropometry, sample collection), imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, and treatment referrals. Provide migrants and refugees with clear information on health assessment processes and treatments. Ensure accurate identification and follow-up through comprehensive history taking, biodata collection, and ID verification. Maintain universal precautions, manage pharmacy stocks, and provide pre/post-counseling on TB and HIV. Prepare administrative reports, support mobile missions, and assist with pre-departure preparations. Conduct medical escort duties when required. Collaborate with internal departments, external health providers, embassies, and other UN agencies. Collect and share statistical information with the National Medical Officer.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant clinical nursing experience is required. Excellent technical skills, including phlebotomy, are essential. Experience in TB management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing, or public health is advantageous. Proficiency in clinical nursing, patient safety, and infection control is expected.
