Organizational Context
The Department of Safeguards is the IAEA's global nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. It develops and implements safeguards to ensure nuclear material is not diverted and no undeclared activities occur. This role is within the Division of Technical and Scientific Services, which provides state-of-the-art equipment and expertise for safeguards activities.
Job Purpose
The Equipment Security Engineer reports to the Team Leader and is responsible for the design, evaluation, qualification, and lifecycle management of mechanical systems and materials used in safeguards equipment. This role provides continuous security assessments to ensure deployed safeguards instrumentation systems meet stringent security requirements under diverse operating conditions. The engineer acts as a technical expert defining security requirements, a specialist assessing vulnerabilities, an analyst conducting failure investigations, and an innovator championing new technologies to maintain IAEA security standards.
Responsibilities
The role involves reviewing technical developments and evaluating mechanical designs for structural integrity, material suitability, and resistance to environmental stress, with a focus on physical protection and tamper resistance. It includes conducting security and vulnerability assessments of deployed equipment, such as enclosures and sealing systems, and preparing relevant technical documentation. The engineer will perform root cause analysis of equipment failures, propose corrective modifications, and support the Vulnerability Review Laboratory with forensic engineering and materials analysis. Additionally, the role provides technical input on materials selection and qualification, contributes to improving mechanical engineering procedures and quality assurance protocols, offers technical guidance and training to staff, and supports procurement processes through technical evaluations.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant working experience in mechanical engineering and systems engineering is required. Experience in the implementation of nuclear safeguards and professional experience at the international level are considered assets.
