Organizational Context

The Department of Management provides essential services supporting the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes. The VIC Medical Service, serving staff of multiple Vienna-based organizations, promotes staff health, ensures a safe work environment, and upholds UN medical standards for approximately 4500 individuals and their dependants.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Medical Director, the Senior Medical Officer's primary purpose is to enhance individual staff health through medical advice, counselling, and facilitating access to treatment. The role also focuses on optimizing general staff health by advising management on occupational health and work environment aspects, and providing medical opinions on individual cases. This position contributes to maintaining a healthy and productive workforce within the Vienna International Centre.

Responsibilities

The Senior Medical Officer will undertake daily clinical duties, including medical examinations, treatments, and managing walk-in clinics and immunizations. Responsibilities include advising staff on travel and preventive medicine, providing first aid and emergency treatment, and overseeing health education and promotion programs. The role involves referring staff to external specialists, coordinating medical requirements, and liaising with medical institutions. Additionally, the Senior Medical Officer will investigate occupational and environmental health issues, advise organizations on occupational health matters and individual cases, and oversee medical clearances, sick leave, and medical insurance claims.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of relevant and progressively responsible clinical experience, including some at an international level, is required. Experience in acting with initiative and independence, making medical decisions, and handling administrative issues and staff supervision is also necessary. Experience in occupational health and business administration is desirable.

Skills

Excellent analytical skills for interpreting medical information and drafting reports. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to plan and organize work effectively. Proficiency in MS Office suite. Knowledge of occupational health, travel medicine, public health, and acute care is required. Working knowledge of radiation protection is an asset.
