Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, through its Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, supports Member States in using nuclear and isotopic techniques for sustainable development. The Animal Production and Health Section and Laboratory specifically aids in improving livestock productivity and disease control, leveraging nuclear techniques for food security and environmental protection.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen Member States' laboratory capacity in aquaculture by generating crucial baseline data on microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The role will provide expertise to detect bacterial pathogens and AMR, thereby informing policy-making through science-based information. This aligns with the Atoms4Food initiative and the PUI project on Integrated Strategies for Managing AMR in Indo-Pacific Aquaculture, contributing to improved food security and sustainable practices.
Responsibilities
The consultant will perform laboratory analyses, including isolating and identifying pathogens, assessing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and generating comprehensive AMR datasets. Responsibilities include conducting metagenomic analyses by preparing samples, sequencing, and identifying microbial communities and resistance genes, with interpretation of outputs. The role also involves providing technical expertise to develop and validate diagnostic assays, such as multiplex PCR protocols, and delivering standard operating procedures. Furthermore, the consultant will prepare and integrate data into reports, manuscripts, and technical documents, and contribute to capacity-building activities through training and guidance material development.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant experience is required, including proficiency in sample collection and preparation for diagnostics from aquatic species, good working knowledge of AMR testing, and hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques like real-time PCR.
Skills
Proficiency in laboratory analyses (pathogen isolation, AMR assessment), metagenomic analysis, diagnostic assay development (PCR), data analysis and reporting, and capacity building. Strong communication skills (written and oral English), time management, attention to detail, and computer proficiency are also essential.
