Library Associate
Organizational Context
The Nuclear Information Section (NIS) within the IAEA's Division of Energy Planning and Nuclear Information and Knowledge fosters the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. It provides essential information services and support to Member States and the IAEA, contributing to capacity building and effective information management systems.
Job Purpose
The Library Associate, under the Library Coordinator's supervision, is responsible for creating and maintaining descriptive cataloguing and metadata for the IAEA Lise Meitner Library's digital and physical resources. This role ensures resources are accurately catalogued according to international standards and integrated into the Library Management System (LMS). Additionally, the Library Associate provides vital information services to library users and offers LMS support to the Library Team, optimizing the system's utilization and accessibility for all.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include creating, maintaining, and enhancing bibliographic and metadata records for library resources, adhering to international standards like RDA and MARC21. This involves reviewing and updating existing records for accuracy and discoverability, and assigning classification numbers and subject headings using controlled vocabularies. The role also entails providing direct user services at the information desk, including circulation and basic reference support. Furthermore, the Library Associate will contribute to metadata governance, quality assurance, and the configuration and optimization of the Library Management System and its discovery platform, including workflow automation to enhance efficiency and user access.
Work Experience
A minimum of six years of relevant working experience is required, with at least five years focused on cataloguing and metadata within a library setting. Experience with MARC 21, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, and UDC is essential, as is proficiency with current technology.
Skills
Proficiency in cataloguing standards (RDA, MARC21), metadata creation, and library management systems. Strong communication, client orientation, and knowledge sharing abilities. Experience with document management and MS Office suite. Understanding of BIBFRAME and RDF is advantageous.
