NAPC-Isotope Hydrology Laboratory

Internship - Water Stable Isotope Analysis

I
Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements Major Programme 2, focusing on nuclear techniques for development and environmental protection. This programme supports Member States in meeting basic human needs and managing environments using nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences advises on nuclear sciences, with the Isotope Hydrology Section planning and implementing water resources programmes, including operating a laboratory for isotope analysis.
Job Purpose
The primary purpose of this internship is to provide crucial support to the Isotope Hydrology Laboratory, which is integral to the IAEA's water resources programme. The intern will be instrumental in the meticulous processing of water samples for a range of stable and radioactive isotope analyses. This encompasses the precise preparation of samples for tritium analysis through helium-3 ingrowth, the execution of trace metal analysis utilizing ICP-MS, and the comprehensive analysis of water stable isotopes. This vital work directly underpins the IAEA's overarching objective to bolster Member States' capabilities in sustainable water resource management. By generating high-quality analytical data and contributing to the advancement of robust methodologies in isotope hydrology, the intern's efforts will significantly contribute to global environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives, while also gaining invaluable practical experience in advanced laboratory techniques.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Head, the intern will execute a range of key tasks essential for the processing of water samples for isotope tracer analysis, directly contributing to and supporting water resource management strategies. Core responsibilities include actively assisting with the meticulous registration and preparation of water samples for stable isotope analysis, ensuring strict adherence to established laboratory protocols and maintaining high standards of accuracy. The intern will also provide support for the analysis of nitrate concentrations in water samples utilizing ion chromatography. A significant and specialized aspect of the role involves assisting with the precise preparation and degassing of samples for tritium analysis through the helium-3 ingrowth method. Furthermore, the intern will play a role in the development of ICP-MS methodologies specifically tailored for water resource management applications and will assist in the comprehensive analysis of stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in water samples. Beyond the hands-on laboratory work, the intern is expected to collaborate closely with Section and Laboratory staff on critical data analysis, contribute to the preparation of scientific presentations, and assist in drafting manuscripts, thereby facilitating the effective dissemination of research findings and knowledge.
Work Experience
Solid knowledge of using analytical equipment in a laboratory environment is required, alongside an understanding of hydrochemistry. Proficiency in standard office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is also essential.
