Emergency Preparedness Coordinator
Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) leads the IAEA's nuclear safety and security program, protecting people and the environment from radiation and supporting Member States. Within NS, the Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is the central point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies, aiming to strengthen Member States' response capabilities.
Job Purpose
The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, reporting to the IEC Director, is responsible for developing and implementing the IAEA's strategy to enhance Member States' preparedness for nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies. This involves managing and coordinating activities to execute the IAEA's program, including assessing the resources needed for specific program components. The role ensures that preparedness measures are robust and adaptable to various causes of emergencies, from accidents and natural disasters to security events.
Responsibilities
This role involves planning, directing, coordinating, and monitoring the implementation of activities to strengthen Member States' preparedness for nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies, aligning with their needs and IAEA Safety Standards. Key duties include managing the development and maintenance of Safety Standards, technical guidelines, and tools, incorporating lessons learned and emerging trends. The coordinator provides expert technical guidance to Member States, oversees technical support for cooperation projects, and fosters collaboration with international organizations. Additionally, the position requires serving as an on-call Emergency Response Manager within the IAEA's Incident and Emergency System, participating in training and exercises, and providing support during IEC activations.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of experience in preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies, and in radiation protection, is required. This includes at least five years at a managerial level and three years at an international level, focusing on developing Safety Standards, technical guidelines, and tools.
Skills
Expertise in Emergency Preparedness and Response, including Emergency Management and Planning. Proven ability to assist Member States in establishing national infrastructure for EPR. Knowledge in nuclear engineering and radiation protection relevant to EPR. Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
