Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, within the IAEA, focuses on enhancing Member States' capacity to meet basic needs and manage environments using nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences supports research and development in nuclear sciences, including nuclear and atomic data for various applications. The Nuclear Data Section (NDS) specifically generates and maintains high-quality nuclear and atomic databases, disseminating them globally.
Job Purpose
The Unit Head will lead a team of physicists and support staff in nuclear data activities, contributing to the IAEA's mission. This role involves developing international guidelines, assisting Member States in leveraging fission and fusion energy technologies, and supporting non-energy applications like medical isotopes. The Unit Head will also develop and implement training programs and provide technical assistance. Reporting to the Head of the Nuclear Data Section, this position is crucial for advancing nuclear data development and application worldwide.
Responsibilities
Oversee and manage the Nuclear Data Development Unit's staff and activities, providing leadership and technical input for reports and databases. Support the Section Head in program and budget planning and monitoring. Develop and implement the Agency's program for creating nuclear databases for diverse applications and research. Identify critical needs for improved nuclear physics data in nuclear technology. Promote, coordinate, and evaluate Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) and related studies. Lead the International Nuclear Data Evaluation Network (INDEN) through collaboration with Member States on nuclear reaction data libraries. Develop international recommendations for nuclear databases to meet Member State needs, leading complex Technical Meetings. Collaborate with IAEA departments, Member State institutions, and international organizations on fission, fusion, and other nuclear data implementation. Plan and conduct training on complex technical topics and provide expert guidance for staff reports.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of relevant experience is required, with at least three years at the international level. Proven experience in nuclear reaction and/or nuclear structure related data activities is essential. Experience in staff management, particularly in developing databases and scientific software, is also highly desirable.
Skills
Expertise in Nuclear Physics, including theoretical and experimental techniques. Familiarity with nuclear data for fission, fusion, and other applications (e.g., medical isotopes). Proficiency in database development and IT. Strong planning, organizing, communication, and results-achieving capabilities. Demonstrated teamwork and partnership-building skills. Commitment to continuous process improvement and technical/scientific credibility.
