Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, focusing on "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection." This programme supports Member States in meeting basic human needs and managing environments using nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, with laboratories in Seibersdorf, enhances food security and sustainable agriculture through these methods.
Job Purpose
Under the supervision of the Laboratory Head, the Laboratory Technician provides essential technical support to the Food Safety and Control Laboratory. This role involves performing routine analytical methods and instrumental analyses to support the laboratory's work programme and subprogramme objectives. A key aspect of the position is to assist in the transfer of technology by supporting the training of fellows and trainees from Member States, ensuring the effective dissemination of nuclear techniques and related methodologies.
Responsibilities
The Laboratory Technician will perform routine duties in preparing, extracting, and cleaning food samples for analysis. This includes assisting with stable isotope measurements and contaminant detection using chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques, alongside statistical analysis within a quality assurance framework. The role involves supporting professional staff in validating analytical methods for food traceability, authenticity, and contaminant control through repeat sample analysis. Responsibilities also include operating and maintaining analytical equipment (IRMS, GC, HPLC), assisting in the preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and demonstrating laboratory procedures to trainees. Additionally, the technician will support radiotracer techniques, manage laboratory records and data, maintain supplies, and ensure laboratory cleanliness. The role may involve working with radioactive materials, requiring medical clearance and adherence to radiation safety regulations.
Work Experience
A minimum of four years of relevant laboratory experience is required, specifically in food analysis or stable/radio-isotope analysis. Experience in operating and maintaining analytical equipment is also essential.
Skills
Excellent oral and written communication in English. Analytical thinking, client orientation, and knowledge sharing/learning are key competencies. Ability to perform routine laboratory procedures and operate analytical equipment.
