Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) at the IAEA formulates and implements nuclear safety and security programmes. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety (NSRW) develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and transport safety. The Waste and Environmental Safety Section, including the Decommissioning and Remediation Unit, focuses on global waste safety frameworks and standards for radioactive waste management, decommissioning, and remediation.
Job Purpose
This consultancy provides essential technical expertise to the Decommissioning and Remediation Unit within the IAEA's Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety. The role is crucial for advancing the Agency's mandate in ensuring safety and security in nuclear-related activities. By contributing specialized knowledge, the consultant will support the development of critical safety standards, guidance documents, and technical services aimed at assisting Member States in the safe decommissioning of facilities, remediation of contaminated environments, and management of radioactive waste, particularly from mining and milling operations.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide technical input for developing a position paper on in-situ disposal/entombment. Responsibilities include offering expertise for national technical cooperation projects on decommissioning, which involves organizing workshops, expert missions, and scientific visits. The role also entails contributing to the development of services for the nuclear "back-end" to support embarking countries and creating practical guidance for decommissioning novel facilities like SMRs and fusion reactors. Furthermore, the consultant will participate in revising the Safety Guide WS-G-5.2 and offer technical expertise on decommissioning safety activities, including safety standards, peer reviews, eLearning materials, and international conferences.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience is required in the planning, implementation, or regulation of facility decommissioning and/or the management of waste and materials from decommissioning. Experience in the technical review and critical evaluation of safety-related documents is also necessary.
Skills
Excellent communication skills, good IT skills (e.g., Excel), and excellent oral and written command of English are required. Knowledge of international guidance on decommissioning and waste management, and experience with technical review of safety documents are also key competencies.
