The Radioecology Laboratory specifically enhances Member States' capabilities in radioecology, ecotoxicology, and biogeochemistry.

Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technician (Aquarium Biology for Radioecology) supports radioecological research by preparing and maintaining experimental aquaria and live marine organisms. This role involves assisting in laboratory experiments, including analyses using radioisotope-based methods, and maintaining laboratory equipment and specialized systems. The technician also contributes to training fellows and interns in marine radiotracer techniques, playing a key role in advancing research and capacity building within the Radioecology Laboratory.

Responsibilities

The role involves conducting radioecology experiments, which includes preparing research aquaria, maintaining marine organisms (phytoplankton, fish, mussels), preparing radiolabelled matrices, and analyzing biological and inorganic samples. The technician will perform regular analyses of marine samples according to established procedures and participate in ship-based sampling missions. Responsibilities also include maintaining laboratory facilities, managing inventories, and ensuring proper waste disposal. Furthermore, the technician will provide technical guidance and assistance for training fellows and other trainees in marine radiotracer techniques, while adhering to safety protocols for handling radioactive materials.

Work Experience

A minimum of four years of relevant working experience is required, focusing on laboratory experimental work in marine biology or radioecology, aquariology, or aquatic research. Working knowledge in aquatic animal husbandry, life support systems, and maintenance of marine organisms is essential.

Skills

Proficiency in marine biology and radioecology laboratory experimental work, including aquaria maintenance. Knowledge of radiotracer applications, ocean acidification, microplastics, and biotoxins. Competency in aquatic animal husbandry and life support systems. Familiarity with ecotoxicology is an asset. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and instrument-specific software for data processing.
