Organizational Context

The Department of Safeguards is the IAEA's global nuclear inspectorate, dedicated to preventing nuclear weapons proliferation. Within this department, the Office of Information and Communication Systems (SGIS) provides essential ICT services, including the development and maintenance of specialized solutions, to support the Safeguards mandate. This role sits within the SGIS-Application Development Team.

Job Purpose

The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, delivering, and supporting robust data solutions and services that align with the Department of Safeguards' strategic and operational objectives. This involves contributing to the evolution of data architecture and managing on-premise data platforms and tools. The role acts as a solution architect, data engineer, and advisor, creating and maintaining ETL processes and data pipelines to meet the department's data needs and supporting stakeholders with data services.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include collaborating with stakeholders to design and implement data products and services using a modern data lakehouse architecture. The role involves designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines for integrating and managing large volumes of data from diverse sources. Maintaining and monitoring the on-premise data architecture, optimizing data flows and database queries, and conducting performance tuning are also crucial. The Data Engineer will stay updated on data management technologies, assess emerging technologies, and contribute to IT projects, domain teams, and process improvement initiatives.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is required, specifically working with complex data integration platforms that support data analysis and services. In-depth experience with data engineering tools like Spark, Trino, Airflow, and Kafka, along with proficiency in Python and SQL, is necessary.

Skills

Proficiency in Python and SQL. Expertise in data engineering, data architecture, and database development (SQL Server, NoSQL solutions). Experience with data modeling and business intelligence analysis. Strong communication, client orientation, and commitment to continuous process improvement.
