Technical Lead (Research Reactor Operation and Maintenance)
Organizational Context
The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology supports Member States in developing safe and effective approaches for research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, waste management, and environmental remediation. The Research Reactor Section specifically assists Member States throughout the research reactor lifecycle, from initial decisions to safe operation, ageing management, and decommissioning, while also promoting access to research reactors for capacity building.
Job Purpose
Reporting to the Research Reactor Section Head, the Technical Lead manages project activities focused on research reactor commissioning, operation, ageing management, refurbishment, and modernization. This role involves gathering and disseminating best practices, enhancing reactor performance and management systems, and fostering partnerships to improve operation and maintenance standards. The Technical Lead also assists Member States in assessing and improving their operational practices and coordinates the development of technical reports, guidance, and best practice documents related to research reactors.
Responsibilities
Organize and conduct scientific meetings, workshops, and conferences on research reactor operation, maintenance, ageing management, refurbishment, and modernization. Lead peer review and advisory missions to help Member States enhance their operational practices and resolve technical issues. Prepare technical documents and reports on research reactor commissioning, operation, ageing management, refurbishment, modernization, analysis, and modelling. Promote, coordinate, and evaluate Coordinated Research Projects, conducting complex studies on relevant issues and trends. Manage e-tools such as information hubs and databases, and provide technical assistance to Member States through cooperation projects. Liaise with Permanent Missions and organizations on project planning, funding, and implementation, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
Work Experience
A minimum of 10 years of relevant working experience is required, including at least two years at the international level. Experience should encompass research reactor design, commissioning, management, operation, modernization, refurbishment, and project management. Experience in fuel cycle, research reactor modelling/analysis, and infrastructure development is considered an asset.
Skills
Expertise in Nuclear Engineering, Project Management, Research Reactor Operation and Maintenance, Research Reactor design, commissioning, operation, ageing management, refurbishment, and modernization. Knowledge of Research Reactor analysis and modelling, planning and building of new research reactor facilities. Strong communication, judgement, decision-making, partnership building, and technical/scientific credibility are essential.
