Organizational Context

The Insect Pest Control Section and Laboratory specifically focus on developing and transferring sterile insect technologies for integrated pest management, addressing pests affecting crops, livestock, and human health.
Job Purpose
The Entomologist (Human Disease Vectors) will lead and implement research and development initiatives focused on advancing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) package for controlling human disease vectors. This role is crucial for developing innovative R&D approaches and ensuring the effective transfer and implementation of these technologies to Member States, contributing to public health and sustainable vector control strategies. The position involves coordinating technical cooperation projects and supporting international collaborations to disseminate these environmentally friendly pest control methods.
Responsibilities
Develop, adapt, and validate technologies for controlling human disease vectors (HDVs) using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) within area-wide integrated pest management programs. Provide expert recommendations and advice to Member States on the transfer and implementation of these technologies, aligning with FAO and IAEA objectives. Introduce innovative R&D approaches for SIT package development at the Insect Pest Control Laboratory. Serve as a technical and project officer, coordinating national, regional, and interregional projects under the IAEA technical cooperation program. Promote, coordinate, and evaluate Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) related to SIT for HDVs. Offer technical support and guidance to visiting scientists and collaborators conducting research at the IPCL, including experimental design and protocol development. Contribute to the creation of manuals, guidelines, and standard operating procedures for SIT applications in HDV control and provide input for reports and newsletters.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of working experience is required, specifically in research and development related to the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) for human disease vectors or similar pests. Experience in an international setting, particularly practical field experience in transferring SIT technologies for human disease vectors in developing countries, is highly desirable.
Skills
Expertise in disease vectors and insect pest control, including extensive experience with mass-rearing techniques for vectors like Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes, quality control management, and radiation protocols. Proficiency in the field application of SIT for mosquito management, handling, release, and monitoring. Strong analytical thinking, planning, organizing, communication, and knowledge-sharing abilities are essential.
