Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) at the IAEA implements programmes to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure and supports Member States' needs. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety (NSRW) develops and maintains standards for radiation protection and waste safety. The Assessment and Management of Releases Unit within NSRW focuses on protecting the public and environment from radioactive releases, establishing standards and providing guidance.
Job Purpose
This consultancy provides essential technical expertise to the Assessment and Management of Releases Unit, specifically focusing on the application of Radiological and Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA). The role is crucial for developing and enhancing the Agency's capabilities in assessing and managing radioactive releases to the environment. By contributing to training packages, pilot implementation of educational initiatives, and technical reviews of safety standards, the consultant will directly support the Unit's mandate to ensure robust protection of the public and the environment from both planned and past practices involving radioactive materials.
Responsibilities
The consultant will develop modules for a training package on environmental radiation monitoring and REIA, incorporating relevant methodologies, case studies, and lessons learned from the IAEA's MEREIA programme. They will provide technical expertise for designing and piloting the "School of Radiation Protection for the Public and the Environment," ensuring coherence and scientific robustness of REIA modules. Additionally, the consultant will contribute to the internal technical review of the draft revision of Safety Report Series No. 19 (SRS 19), coordinating peer review inputs to support the training package and School curriculum development.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in public and environmental radiation protection is required, with at least three years focused on assessing the impact of environmental releases. Experience in technical review and critical evaluation of safety reports or draft documents is also needed.
Skills
Knowledge of REIA principles, methodologies, and models; understanding of environmental radiation monitoring strategies; IT skills (e.g., Excel); excellent communication skills; and excellent oral and written command of English.
