IAEA
NAPC-Terrestrial Environmental Radiochemistry (TERC) Laboratory
Internship - Radiation Detection and Measurement
Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, within the IAEA, focuses on enhancing Member States' capacities through nuclear techniques for development and environmental protection. This department supports programmes in food, agriculture, health, water, environment, and radiation technologies, utilizing laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco, and Vienna to address basic human needs and environmental management.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience by supporting the gamma-spectrometry laboratory at the Terrestrial Environmental Radiochemistry (TERC) Laboratory. The intern will gain exposure to real-world applications of nuclear techniques, contributing to the laboratory's operational efficiency. Key activities include performing measurements on environmental samples and actively participating in quality assurance processes, thereby supporting the TERC Laboratory's mandate and the broader objectives of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist in the commissioning of gamma-spectrometry instrumentation and evaluate analysis software within the TERC Laboratory. Responsibilities include performing measurements on candidate reference materials, including new IAEA reference materials, and contributing to the preparation of final technical reports. The intern will also support proficiency testing activities, which involves characterizing samples for participating laboratories, and contribute to quality assurance processes, particularly those aligned with ISO17034 standards. A final presentation summarizing all work undertaken will be required.
Work Experience
While specific years of experience are not detailed, the role requires the ability to work within a laboratory environment and undertake analytical tasks. Familiarity with radiometrology techniques, particularly gamma-spectrometry, is a key requirement for successful participation in the internship.
Skills
Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is essential. Fluency in any other official IAEA language is an asset. Ability to work in a laboratory and perform analytical tasks. Knowledge of radiometrology and gamma-spectrometry techniques.
