Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) at the IAEA is responsible for implementing the Agency's nuclear safety and security program. The Division of Nuclear Security (NSNS) specifically coordinates and executes the nuclear security program to protect against, detect, and respond to threats. Within NSNS, the Nuclear Security Detection Architecture Unit focuses on assisting Member States in developing national detection architectures for nuclear and radioactive materials outside of regulatory control.
Job Purpose
The Science and Technology Technical Lead will serve as a key expert within the Nuclear Security Detection Architecture Unit, facilitating the integration of science and technology into the IAEA's nuclear security efforts. This role is crucial for providing and delivering specialized S&T content to Member States, thereby enhancing their capabilities in detecting and responding to nuclear and radioactive materials outside of regulatory control. The position involves leading program design, coordinating research, and contributing expertise to support the development, implementation, and sustainment of effective nuclear security measures and national detection architectures.
Responsibilities
The Science and Technology Technical Lead will coordinate and provide technical expertise on nuclear science and technology matters related to nuclear security. This includes organizing and monitoring research projects, technical meetings, and consultancy meetings. The role involves developing and implementing capacity-building activities in S&T for Member States, based on identified needs. The incumbent will contribute to the development of Nuclear Security Guidance documents, training materials, and other publications, promoting their use by Member States. Responsibilities also include analyzing trends to drive innovation in research and development of tools and applications, ensuring the timely collection, analysis, and dissemination of scientific and technical information, and promoting the sustainable implementation of relevant tools and applications in Member States.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in nuclear security is required, with a focus on nuclear security science and technology in national and international contexts. This includes at least five years of experience in the research, development, and deployment of nuclear security systems, with proven experience in roles such as project manager, researcher, or program developer.
Skills
Expertise in Material Out of Regulatory Control Detection Systems and Measures, knowledge of nuclear security detection instruments, and information alerts management. Extensive knowledge of national nuclear security regimes. Proven project management experience. Excellent oral and written command of English.
